If you are choosing between the two technologies today, LED Garden Lighting is the better option for almost every outdoor application, including gardens, pathways, courtyards, and commercial landscapes. It consumes less electricity for the same brightness, lasts far longer before failure, produces less waste heat near plants, and requires significantly less maintenance over a five-year period. High-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps were the industry standard for decades because of their high lumen output per fixture, but that advantage has been overtaken by modern LED chips. Efficiency is measured in lumens per watt (lm/W), which tells you how much visible light a fixture produces for each unit of electricity it consumes. According to solid-state lighting research published by the U.S. Department of Energy, high-quality outdoor LED fixtures typically deliver between 130 and 200 lm/W, while standard HPS lamps generally range from 90 to 150 lm/W, with older or lower-grade HPS units falling closer to the bottom of that range.

In practical terms, a garden that once needed a 100W HPS fixture to light a path can often be lit to the same brightness with a 20 to 25W LED fixture, cutting energy draw by roughly 70 to 75 percent on that circuit alone.
Lifespan is where the gap becomes most noticeable for garden and landscape projects, since replacing fixtures buried in planting beds or mounted on poles is labor-intensive. Industry lifespan data compiled by Energy Star lists standard HPS lamps at roughly 24,000 hours of rated life, after which output degrades significantly. For nearly all garden, path, and landscape lighting projects, LED Garden Lighting is the more efficient, longer-lasting, and lower-maintenance choice compared to high-pressure sodium lamps. The higher upfront cost is typically recovered within a few years through reduced electricity use and far fewer replacements, while also improving how the landscape actually looks at night.
